Staff writer Rick Stroud posted an update on WR Michael Clayton's status a little bit ago.

Then I followed up with a phone interview with Clayton. He made it absolutely clear that, all things being equal, his heart is in Tampa Bay. Problem is, the Bucs might be unable to meet his contract expectations.

The situation remains fluid, but Clayton said he might be willing to stay with the Bucs for less money than offered elsewhere, but not if it means "leaving millions on the table." Still, the sides are still talking, even though it appears there's a significant gap.

"Right now, it's still up in the air," Clayton said. "I know there's
an opportunity for me to come back. I want to be back. But I think it's
going to come down to money. There's a thin line between taking less
money and trying to be a part of this organization and what they're
building, and leaving millions on the table. But I love and respect
(the Bucs) and I want to be a part of it."

Clayton's representatives have made his wishes known. Right now, the
Bucs are working on another counteroffer that could be submitted today.
The process probably will repeat itself again before we reach Friday's
kickoff to free agency.

Some would argue Clayton isn't worth the kind of money that will be
paid to elite receivers. That's understandable given his lack of
production the last few seasons. But, for the Bucs, perhaps Clayton is
more valuable given their great need at the position. It's too early to
say where the front office stands. But we'll know soon.

Either way, it's clear the Bucs can have Clayton back if the price is right.
