Multiple reports indicate linebacker Derrick Brooks has been identified as a possible target for the Chicago Bears, who lost Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher (wrist) in a Sunday night loss at Green Bay. The Bears also lost strong-side linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa for several weeks.

Brooks has maintained that he is intent on playing this season if the right scenario presents itself. He already has had workouts with the Saints and Raiders.

Brooks was released by the Bucs in February after 14 seasons.

ESPN reported that Bears coach Lovie Smith called Brooks after the game and the sides continue to have dialogue. Brooks is considered a natural weak-side linebacker but is capable of playing the strong-side, too. And with Urlacher's loss, it's possible weak-side starter Lance Briggs could slide into the middle, opening a spot at his usual position.

The Chicago connections to Brooks are plentiful. Smith was Brooks'  former linebackers coach in Tampa Bay and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli worked alongside Brooks for years while with the Bucs. And Bears general manager Jerry Angelo was groomed for his current post in the Bucs' personnel department.
