Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Jermaine Phillips has broken left thumb

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jermaine Phillips has a broken left thumb. He is expected to be out between 6-8 weeks and is a candidate to be placed on Injured Reserve.

Phillips was injured during the second half of Sunday's 33-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Phillips' career has been marred by broken forearms and a wrist, including a pair of breaks last season.

The injury is yet another blow to the Bucs' defense. Safety Tanard Jackson has two games remaining on his four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

"Jermaine Phillips is the guy we're really concerned with," coach Raheem Morris said today during his weekly news conference at One Buc Place. "He broke his thumb. Doctors are going to see him again this morning. We'll have some further detail on that to come.''
