Buccaneers FB B.J. Askew out for season after car accident

UPDATED, 5:44 p.m.: Based on additional information we've learned, it turns out Askew's accident, in which he was rear-ended, was worse than originally known. As a result, Askew has been dealing with neck and back pain that is not improving, causing the team to make today's roster move. In fact, the car he was driving sustained significant damage and may have been a total loss. Askew should recover in the long term, but as of now, he's not in any shape to play football.

5:29 p.m.: The Bucs have placed FB B.J. Askew on the non-football injury list a week after he was involved in what the team called a minor car accident. Askew will remain there for the duration of the season.

Askew, who played fullback in the first five games of the season, was listed on the injury report last week as having neck and back pain. But coach Raheem Morris declined to be specific beyond calling his accident a "fender bender."

In addition, the Bucs signed CB Marcus McCauley and released CB Derrick Roberson from the active roster. Roberson was immediately signed to the practice squad. McCauley was released by the Lions on September 28. He was a 2007 third-round pick of the Vikings, playing in all 16 games for Minnesota that season with nine starts.
