Raheem Morris envisions physical role for new safety Sean Jones
I ran into Raheem Morris in Gainesville today at the University of Florida pro day, where he was likely was taking particular interest in defenders Joe Haden and Brandon Spikes. But Morris took a little time from scouting potential Buccaneers to talk about the newest Buccaneer.
That would be safety Sean Jones, who was officially signed today to a two-year contract. Morris seems to envision Jones playing a physical role for the Bucs, a player who has a unique ability to be effective when playing in the box.
"He’s a nice box presence, but he also has some athleticism on the back end and some big-time movement,” Morris said. “You’re talking about a guy who, when you see him, you’ll see a demanding presence. You’ll see a guy who comes in the box and you have to account for.
“He has all the qualities we like. We’re fired up to have him.”
The addition of Jones will, at the very least, create competition at safety, a position that lacked that last season. Morris said this was one of the biggest benefits of adding Jones.
Asked about whether the Bucs would make any other forays into free agency after their second signing of an unrestricted free agent, Morris said the club hasn’t ruled out the possibility.
“You’re always looking to improve your team in any way you can (with someone) that fits your system,” he said. “If we can find more people that fit our system before the draft, then that’s what we’ll do.
"If not, we’ll let the draft come.”
