Safeties Berry and Mays impress on final day of NFL combine
The Bucs should feel pretty good about their options at safety in the NFL draft.
Tennessee's Eric Berry, projected by many mock drafts to be Tampa Bay's selection with the No. 3 overall pick, ran a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash and benched pressed 225-pounds 19 times. He demonstrated his athleticism with a 43-inch vertical jump and had a broad jump of 10-feet, 10-inches.
Remember, Berry played under Monte Kiffin at Tennessee and knows the Bucs defensive system inside and out. He had 14 career interceptions in three seasons with the Vols.
But Berry wasn't the buzz at the NFL Scouting Combine Tuesday. It was Southern Cal safety Taylor Mays, who ran an eye-popping 4.43 in the 40-yard dash. That's remarkable considering Mays is 6-foot-3, 230-pounds. He also did 24 reps of 225-pounds on the bench press.
That performance will move Mays higher into the first round, but his lack of production at USC still is a concern. He recorded just five career interceptions, including three as a freshman.
