New York/New Jersey gets 2014 Super Bowl
The NFL will have its first-ever, cold-weather Super Bowl, as New York/New Jersey today was awarded the league's 2014 championship game.
The decision was announced from the NFL owners' spring meeting in Dallas. Tampa Bay and South Florida were the other bidders.
New York/New Jersey won on the fourth ballot, receiving a simple majority of the 32 votes. As the lowest vote-getter, South Florida was eliminated after the second vote.
"The greatest game in the world will be played on the greatest stage in the world,'' New York Giants co-owner Jonathan Tisch said.
The NFL waived its cold-weather restriction, clearing the way for the game to be played in the newly-opened Meadowlands Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 82,500. The league requires a city with an outdoor stadium have an average temperature of 50 degrees or higher in early February in order to place a bid.
The average February temperature for New York/New Jersey is 40 degrees, compared to 71 for Tampa Bay and 77 for South Florida.
Tampa Bay previously hosted Super Bowls XLIII, XXXV, XXV, XVIII. South Florida has hosted 10 Super Bowls.
"When you've done something four times, you're just good at it,'' Tampa mayor Pam Iorio said in an interview aired during the announcement show.
In addition to its experience and weather, Tampa Bay's presentation emphasized the social impact of another Super Bowl, describing plans to turn the Riverwalk into a Super Bowl Victory Village that would feature Curtis Hixon Park, the new Tampa Museum of Art, the new Tampa Bay History Center and the Glazer Children's Museum.
"If I could host the Super Bowl every year, I would,'' Iorio said.
