The most important thing from day one of Bucs mini camp

TAMPA — The Bucs opened mini camp Tuesday. We asked the Times coverage team for the most important thing they saw or heard from day one:

Greg Auman, beat writer

Second-year Bucs receiver Chris Godwin makes big plays in practice so consistently it's easy to overlook sometimes. He caught two passes in an uptempo two-minute drill, and later he made a high leaping touchdown catch on a Jameis Winston pass and just as naturally lobbed the football up for Mike Evans, who dunked over the crossbar. No player has drawn more steady praise since the end of last season.

Tom Jones, columnist

Chris Godwin making another sensational catch, further proving that the Bucs got an absolute steal when they drafted this kid in the third round of last year's draft. Mike Evans remains this team's go-to receiver and the hope is DeSean Jackson will have a more impactful season in 2018 than he did in 2017. But this franchise is high on Godwin and for good reason. Prediction: he will double his 34-catch rookie season.

Martin Fennelly, columnist

The most important thing I saw at mini-camp was Jameis Winston and DeSean Jackson trying to reconnect, as if they ever connected in the first place. Winston missed Jackson on one deep ball, and then I turned away. Maybe they hooked up later. They'll have to make it happen this season, unlike last season, when Jackson seemed a waste as a downfield threat

Rick Stroud, beat writer

The most important thing I saw on Day 1 was Jameis Winston finding DeSean Jackson on a deep ball for a TD. Sure, they didn't connect on two others. But one out of three is an improvement.
