Gerald McCoy: Relax, Buckner yelling is just ‘coaching’

A video clip last week showed new Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner yelling at Gerald McCoy after he was drawn offsides during practice, and the Pro Bowl defensive tackle made it clear on Thursday: There's nothing in any way wrong with that.

"Y'all made a big deal out of nothing," McCoy said. "It's the NFL. Am I not supposed to get coached? He's coaching. It's what he's paid to do. He's been given an assignment, and he's going to do his assignment to the best of his ability.

"That didn't faze me. I'm a 30-year-old man. I have four (kids) and my wife is pregnant. I've been paying my own bills since I was in college. You think a grown man yelling at me fazes me? He's coaching."

Buckner, who was brought in to replace Jay Hayes after the Bucs finished last in the league with 22 sacks in 2017, has been well-received by players this offseason. The Bucs have made major additions to the defensive line, and McCoy said he has no problem with how Buckner is coaching him.

"Hear the message, not the tone," he said. "Y'all made a big deal: 'He's yelling at Gerald.' Duh! He's a coach. That's what he's supposed to do. So what? It's hot outside. He's hot, I'm hot. He's doing his job, I'm doing my job. The reality is, if I don't jump offsides, that doesn't happen."

McCoy has been much improved on penalties in recent years — he was flagged only twice in all of last season, and only one, for encroachment, was accepted. In 2016, he had a single penalty each for encroachment, offsides and neutral zone infraction, but that's down from six such total penalties in 2014 and 2015.
