Bucs add another corner in well-traveled Edwards

30

July

With corners Alterraun Verner (hamstring) and Rashaan Melvin (ankle) limited in the first week of preseason camp, the Bucs have signed a cornerback for the second time in three days, adding former Missouri cornerback Kip Edwards.

Edwards, 24, takes the roster spot of former Bucs guard Carl Nicks, who was officially released Wednesday, unable to return to football after a toe injury related to a MRSA infection last year. Edwards was undrafted in 2013 and has quickly made the rounds -- cut by the Bills at the end of camp last year, then a brief stint on the Browns' practice squad, then finishing the year on the Vikings' practice squad. They signed him to a futures contract after the season but cut him in June -- the Bucs and Chiefs brought him in for workouts during minicamps but didn't sign him from there.

Edwards had five interceptions in four season at Missouri, with three fumbles recoveries and six tackles for loss as a senior in 2012. The Bucs brought back corner Anthony Gaitor on Monday to address the depth concerns while Verner and Melvin are sidelined, so the lesser of Gaitor and Edwards could be cut once the Bucs have a healthy secondary again.

The team now has 18 defensive backs in camp and is likely to keep 10 on its 53-man roster, with at least seven spots already penciled in for in corners Verner, Johnthan Banks and Mike Jenkins, safeties Mark Barron, Dashon Goldson and Major Wright and nickel Leonard Johnson. That leaves safety Keith Tandy, corners Melvin and Deveron Carr and nickel Danny Gorrer battling for three spots, along with new additions Edwards and Gaitor, rookie corner Keith Lewis, safeties Kelcie McCray, Bradley McDougald and Mycal Swaim and nickel Quinton Pointer.
