With questionable depth at receiver worsened by injuries, the Bucs are bringing veteran receiver Cecil Shorts for a visit, potentially upgrading their options for Jameis Winston's passing game.

Shorts, 28, has averaged 54 catches for 698 yards over the last four seasons and was released by the Texans over the weekend. He has a history with Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, who was the Jaguars' offensive coordinator during Shorts' rookie season in 2011, when he was with the team all season but had only two catches. His visit to the Bucs was first reported by ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Shorts, who is 6 feet and 202 pounds, had 42 catches last year for 484 yards with the Texans and would be an upgrade on the Bucs' existing receiver depth -- Adam Humphries and Russell Shepard have 27 and seven career catches, respectively, and No. 5 receiver Evan Spencer has played in only one NFL game.

Shorts is among the best available free-agent receivers after NFL cuts, but the Bucs have him in for a visit, so they're in position to make a key addition just days before the 2016 season begins.

Tampa Bay has veteran receiver Louis Murphy out at least the first six weeks of the season recovering from knee surgery. They lost backup receivers Donteea Dye, Kenny Bell and Bernard Reedy to injuries in the final two weeks of the preseason as well.
