Bucs draft SLB in sixth with Oklahoma's Devante Bond
The Bucs filled another hole in their defense, finding a strongside linebacker to pair with veteran Daryl Smith by drafting Oklahoma's Devante Bond in the sixth round on Saturday.
Bond, 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, only ran a 4.7 40-yard dash at the combine, but he played well in two seasons at Oklahoma, getting seven tackles for loss and three sacks in nine games as a senior. Like cornerback Ryan Smith, he's another Bucs rookie who didn't take up football until his senior year of high school, playing two years of junior college ball before going to Oklahoma.
The Bucs had talked about their new veterans on defense being "bridge" players to mentor incoming rookies -- Brent Grimes now matches up with Vernon Hargreaves at cornerback, Robert Ayers with Noah Spence at defensive end and now Smith and Bond at strongside linebacker.
