Bucs name Gill Byrd as cornerbacks coach
Lovie Smith continues to fill out an impressive staff of assistants, as the Bucs announced Friday the addition of another of his former Bears colleagues, former All-Pro corner Gill Byrd, as the team's cornerbacks coach.
Byrd, 52, spent seven seasons working with the Bears, moving quickly from defensive quality control (2006) to assistant defensive backs coach (2007) to safeties coach (2008-12). He was a four-time All-Pro in a 10-year career as a defensive back with the Chargers from 1983-92, finishing his career with a team-record 42 interceptions.
Byrd worked with elite defensive backs in Chicago like Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings and Major Wright. He's the father of Bills safety Jairus Byrd, a three-time All-Pro himself who lost to the Bucs this season. Byrd will work alongside newly hired safeties coach Mikal Smith, Lovie's son and a colleague of both coaches with the Bears.
