Bucs' Sweezy, Murphy start training camp on PUP list
The Bucs will open training camp on Thursday with two key players held out of practice, as the team announced Tuesday that guard J.R. Sweezy and receiver Louis Murphy will start camp on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.
Neither player practiced with the Bucs at any point in the offseason -- Murphy is recovering from ACL surgery in November, while Sweezy is recovering from an unspecified procedure this spring. Both can be activated at any point and resume practicing with the team.
The Bucs also waived guard Garrett Gilkey -- out since last August with ACL surgery -- with a failed physical designation, signing undrafted rookie Joel Hale to take his place on the roster. Hale was a tryout player at Bucs rookie minicamp and is listed as an offensive guard, though he only played defensive line while at Ohio State, totaling 32 tackles in four seasons. He worked at offensive line in 2014 while redshirting, but went back to defense and had 12 tackles as a senior in 2015.
Undrafted rookie safety Elijah Shumate is on the active non-football injury list to start camp, with no indication of what that injury is.
