Bucs to promote WR Jeremy Butler to active roster
After four weeks on their practice squad, the Bucs are promoting former Ravens receiver Jeremy Butler to the active roster, adding a new target for Jameis Winston going into Monday's game at Carolina.
Butler, 25, had 31 catches in eight games with Baltimore last season, and signed with the Bucs after he was among the Ravens' final preseason cuts. He was among the NFL's top receivers in the preseason, catching 16 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bucs initially opted to promote Freddie Martino when veteran Cecil Shorts was sidelined by a hamstring injury, and Martino was active for the last two games but did not catch a pass in limited playing time. Martino was waived Monday and could wind up trading spots with Butler if he isn't claimed by another team.
The Bradenton native has good size at 6-foot-2, 213 pounds, and should give the Bucs another target to complement Mike Evans, Vincent Jackson and Adam Humphries.
