For the second time in as many days, the Bucs have tweaked their opening roster, waiving No. 3 running back Mike James with a lingering injury Wednesday. Tampa Bay will promote undrafted rookie Peyton Barber from the practice squad before Sunday's season opener in Atlanta.

James, who didn't play a snap last season and spent most of the year on the practice squad, had made the Bucs' initial cut, despite totaling 20 yards on 13 carries in the preseason and missing the final two games with injury. His waiving will come with an injury settlement that will keep the Bucs from re-signing him for a month or more.

Barber, who had only one season as a starter at Auburn, will be promoted to serve as the No. 3 back behind Pro Bowler Doug Martin and No. 2 back Charles Sims. Barber led the Bucs with 99 rushing yards in the preseason, but averaged only 2.5 yards per carry, though he also had seven catches for 55 yards. He had passed through waivers unclaimed after he was cut this weekend, then re-signed to the practice squad Sunday.

This move comes a day after the Bucs signed veteran receiver Cecil Shorts on Tuesday, waiving Evan Spencer to make room.

The Bucs returned to the practice field Wednesday, with only two players limited by injuries -- TE Luke Stocker was held out with a back injury, while rookie LB Devante Bond practiced but was limited after missing two weeks with a hamstring injury.
