Cam Newton's pick for NFL MVP? Raiders' Derek Carr
As much as the Panthers have trailed off from last year's 15-1 campaign and NFC title, Cam Newton is still the reigning NFL MVP, and as he prepares to finish his 2016 season in Tampa on Sunday against the Bucs, he was asked who he would pick as the MVP of this NFL season.
His answer? Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who has thrown for 3,933 yards with 28 touchdowns against only six interceptions in leading Oakland to a 12-3 record. Carr was lost to a season-ending leg injury last weekend, but he has Newton's vote, especially after he threw for 315 yards and two scores to beat Carolina in Week 12.
"For him, and his important to his team," Newton said. "When we played Oakland, it was a different team. When he came back in ... the energy was just as impactful as anybody coming back in the game, and what he meant to his team was everything. That's why I'd vote for him."
There's likely little argument from the Bucs, as Carr threw for 513 yards and four touchdowns in a 30-24 win over the Bucs in Tampa on Oct. 30.
