Carter back at practice, working at middle linebacker
When the Bucs lost middle linebacker Kwon Alexander to a four-game suspension, their first answer was to start Bruce Carter, who had a sack and eight tackles, only to be sidelined by an ankle injury and miss Thursday's game against the Rams.
As the Bucs returned to practice Tuesday, Carter was back practicing as well, and getting work in the middle again, with last week's starter, Danny Lansanah, back to his old position at strongside linebacker.
Bucs coach Lovie Smith declined to respond to a question about the middle linebacker position, in part because the league doesn't require teams to acknowledge injuries until Wednesday in a normal game week. The Bucs on Friday waived Orie Lemon, who had started at strongside against the Rams and was eventually replaced by rookie Josh Keyes. Smith said Keyes was "OK" in his first defensive snaps of the season.
Also sidelined for the Bucs on Tuesday were WR Vincent Jackson (knee), S Chris Conte (knee) and DE Kourtnei Brown (groin). Left guard Logan Mankins was also sidelined, but that could be for a day of rest. Mankins played all but three snaps in Thursday's game.
