Aqib Talib relieved after change in Bucs' defensive philosophy
Cornerback Aqib Talib said bluntly today that he disliked his duties in former defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme, one that called for Talib to matched up in press coverage at the line of scrimmage.
Asked what was different about the defense down the stretch last season once it was taken over by head coach Raheem Morris, Talib said, "I think, personally, there were a lot better decisions. A lot less man-press on the line. It’s not 40 snaps of man-press on the line. With these receivers nowadays, you really can’t do that. You’re asking for it, to lose one battle and get a touchdown caught on you.
"It’s just a lot better decisions on defense and a lot better play calling."
Ouch.
Talib is a player to watch this season. Morris intends to play to his strengths and allow his budding star to make plays. Talib finished with five interceptions, tying for the team lead.
