BUCCANEERS DB BARBER NAMED NFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The National Football League today announced that Tampa Bay Buccaneers DB Ronde Barber was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1.
For the 10th time in his career, including the postseason, Barber earned Player of the Week honors after recording five tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and two passes defensed, in a 16-10 win over the division rival Carolina Panthers. Barber also started for the 200th consecutive time in his career at cornerback, the longest streak at cornerback in NFL history and the longest active consecutive start streak among all players in the NFL. The interception marked the 44th of Barber's career and ranks as the most in team history. The sack was his 28th, the most ever for a cornerback in NFL history. He is also the only player in NFL history to record 40 or more interceptions and 25 or more sacks in a career.
Barber has the most Player of the Week awards in team history, as this marks the 36th time and the first since Week 3 in 2011 (also Ronde Barber) that a Buccaneer has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. He has earned Player of the Week honors at least once in nine of his 16 seasons in the league.
