Bucs add another kicker

This was in today’s newspaper but appears to have slipped through the cracks and wasn’t posted here.

The Bucs on Tuesday claimed Cowboys kicker Kai Forbath off waivers, giving them a second kicker on the active roster – not including franchise-player designee Connor Barth.

Forbath spent his rookie season last fall on Dallas’ reserve/non-football injury list with a quad injury that was pre-existing.

But before entering the league, he was an accomplished college kicker at UCLA, winning the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s best place kicker. Forbath converted 85 of 101 field goal attempts (84.2 percent) at UCLA, including 10 of 13 from 50 yards or longer.

So, the question still looms: Why are the Bucs signing another kicker? Could it be related to the status of Barth, who is staying away from One Buc Place in hopes of striking a deal on the long-term contract he's seeking?

Our take: The intent is two-fold. The Bucs are protecting themselves, to an extent, while also taking advantage of an opportunity to take a closer look at a solid kicking prospect just in case they need one down the road.
