Bucs' Anthony Gaitor gets big opportunity before hometown crowd

Cornerback Anthony Gaitor played enough during his rookie season that he’s no longer wide-eyed about playing in the NFL.

But Friday night’s preseason matchup against the Dolphins in Miami will be unique for the second-year player.

It’s the first time he’ll get to play in his hometown as a professional.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it, man,” Gaitor said. “It’s the hometown, man. It’s just another game to me, but it is a little special. Nothing major. I have about 20 family members coming. They’re coming to show their support.”

Just a couple of years ago, those same family members might have been at Sun Life Stadium to support . . . the Dolphins. Gaitor put a stop to that when he was drafted by the Bucs in 2011 out of Florida International.

“All of them were Dolphins fans,” Gaitor said. “They’ve switched over now, though. They got to ride with the Bucs now.”

Gaitor could provide his family with something to cheer for. He’ll likely get some playing with the starting defense with left cornerback Aqib Talib still dealing with a hamstring strain. He hasn’t practiced all week. E.J. Biggers, the third cornerback the past two seasons, remains on the sidelines with a broken foot and isn’t expected back for a few more weeks.

All that has provided an opportunity for Gaitor to play key snaps in practice. Friday, he’ll also get that opportunity under the lights.
