Bucs draft Hokies safety Grimm in 7th round

The Bucs have used the first of their five seventh-round picks on Cody Grimm, a safety from Virginia Tech and the son of former Redskins great Russ Grimm.

Grimm, 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, played linebacker for the Hokies but will be a safety in the NFL. The former walk-on earned first-team All-ACC honors as a senior, leading Virginia Tech in tackles and tying an NCAA record by forcing three fumbles in a game against N.C. State.

Grimm was busy in the opposing backfield in Blacksburg, getting 14 tackles for loss as a junior and 12.5 as a senior, with seven forced fumbles as a senior.

If Grimm can make the Bucs' roster, he'll go up against his father as a rookie -- the elder Grimm is assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals, who play host to the Bucs on Oct. 31.
