Bucs hire Waanstedt as special teams coach
Dave Waanstedt gave Greg Schiano his first job in the NFL. On Friday, the Bucs head coach sort of repaid the favor.
The Bucs reached a contract agreement with Waanstedt, 60, to become their special teams coach, replacing Bob Ligashesky who was fired after one season earlier this week.
The Bucs ranked 30th in the NFL in kickoff returns.
As head coach of the Chicago Bears, Waanstedt hired Schiano as defensive assistant in 1996 before promoting him to defensive backs coach in 1998.
Waanstedt was an assistant with the Buffalo Bills the past two seasons. He coached linebackers and was the assistant head coach in 2011 before serving as defensive coordinator last season.
Waanstedt was the head coach of the Chicago Bears (1993-98), Miami Dolphins (2000-04) and the University of Pittsburgh (2005-10).
