Bucs impressed by Panthers rookie QB Cam Newton
The Bucs knew they were in for a big challenge with Panthers dual-threat QB Cam Newton coming into town, and the 2011 top pick had his way with Tampa Bay, racking up three touchdowns rushing and one passing.
"Watching that guy on film, every week you see a great player," DT Roy Miller said. "You always tell yourself, 'Stop him.' And we couldn't do that today. The guy is phenomenal. I told somebody else, if you were to sit at home and create a Madden quarterback, that's the guy - 99 speed, 99 everything. The guy played like that today."
Newton finished with 204 yards passing (and a 106.1 quarterback rating) while rushing for 54 yards and three scores. He prolonged drives by escaping the pass rush and scrambling, and even caught a pass for 27 yards to set up another touchdown.
"He's a handful," DE Da'Quan Bowers said. "Anytime you get that kind of athlete with that kind of caliber, you know he can run, he can throw - it's a dual threat. You've got to read your keys and keep your eyes where they need to be and react."
