Bucs' Lavonte David, Panthers' Cam Newton have a little history
Here's a cool story about the last time Lavonte David ran into Cam Newton.
The two opposed each other in 2009 when their teams met with the junior college national championship on the line. Newton’s Blinn Junior College topped David’s Fort Scott Community College, but David made quite the first impression.
David earned the game’s defensive most valuable player award after recording 12 tackles and a sack of Newton. He also had two tackles for losses. Newton also proved a handful. He threw for 111 yards, but rushed 14 times for 110 yards and a touchdown.
“It was a challenge,” David said. “He’s a great football player. He did it at Auburn, too, Division I and all.”
Both turned out all right. David moved on to Nebraska and became a first-team All-America selection at outside linebacker. The Bucs drafted him in the second round this year. Newton went on to Auburn, won the Heisman Trophy and became the top pick in the 2011 draft.
Sunday, at Raymond James Stadium, they meet again when the Bucs host the Panthers.
