Bucs long snapper Economos tears Achilles tendon

Bucs long snapper Andrew Economos has torn his Achilles tendon, general manager Mark Dominik said Thursday.

Dominik was unsure how the injury occurred, but it's one that could prevent Economos from playing in 2011. The 28-year-old Economos has not missed a game in the past four seasons.

NFL teams are prohibited from having contact with players during the current lockout. But team doctors and trainers are able to monitor the progress of injured players through a third party.

“You have to operate as if none of your players are going to be there in a way,'' Dominik said during a news conference to address the upcoming NFL draft. "We got some unfortunate news the other day that our long snapper popped his Achilles tendon.''

An undrafted player from Georgia Tech, Economos joined the Bucs practice squad in 2006 and was promoted to the active roster. He played in four games before suffering a knee injury that ended his season.
