Bucs lose G Joseph and S Grimm for season
The Bucs lost two starters in Sunday's 17-10 defeat at Baltimore.
Guard Davin Joseph suffered a broken foot and safety Cody Grimm broke the fibula in his left leg. Both players will be lost for the season.
Joseph was injured in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Ravens. Grimm's injury came during an interception return by Aqib Talib.
"Cody Grimm and Davin Joseph will both go to I.R.,'' coach Raheem Morris said. "They're headed that way. We lost those two players yesterday. We lost Davin very early with the broken foot, I believe...and lost Cody with a broken lower leg about 24 snaps into it. Very unfortunate plays. We're going to miss those players a lot. But that's the nature of the beast in the NFL. The next person will step up and be ready to fill their role.
"(Jeremy) Zuttah will be ready to go. We'll have a nice battle at safety with Sabby (Piscitelli) and (Corey) Lynch and (practice squad player) Vince Anderson. All those guys are working back there. So we look forward to getting better. I looking forward to having the challenge of coaching those guys and getting those guys to go out there and prove everybody wrong again.''
Morris said the Bucs also would consider moving cornerback Ronde Barber to safety, but that scenario appears less likely.
"Ronde is always in that thought to go back at safety.'' Morris said. "Really, you don't want to move any of those guys because of how well they're playing, Aqib (Talib) or Ronde. But both those guys have the mental capacity, both those guys play physical enough and do all the similar things together to able to go back there and give you some stuff at safety as well. I know you guys have seen some of our inverted stuff and some of the stuff we switch for those guys to put them back there. That's always a thought process we've got to go through the next few days and figure out how we want to make that thing look.''
Backup center Jeremy Zuttah replaced Joseph at right guard Sunday at Baltimore and will start Sunday against the Falcons in that spot. Ted Larsen will play left guard. The Bucs plan to promote guard Brandon Carter from the practice squad, according to offensive coordinator Greg Olson.
Grimm, a seventh round pick from Virginia Tech, took over from safety Tanard Jackson, who was suspended indefinitely after playing two games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
In the past few weeks, Grimm has played his best football and was a big run stopper against San Francisco and the Ravens until his injury.
"Of course, you're going to miss Cody,'' Morris said. "Cody was one of the guys who was a catalyst of making us become violent, making us physical, making us smart, making us consistent. All those things he brought to the table and he was able to give us. He certainly will be missed by his teammates, especially. The guy. Him being around the locker room and being the guy that he is.
"But it is what it is. You deal in this league and we're prepared to do that.''
