Bucs, Mark Dominik agree to four-year contract extension

The NFL lockout has brought the league to a virtual shutdown, but the Bucs have been busy negotiating a deal that will keep their general manager on board for years to come.

The team announced this morning that GM Mark Dominik has signed a four-year contract extension, alleviating any concerns about his original deal, which was set to expire after the 2011 season.

Dominik, who joined the organization in the player personnel department in 1995, helped direct the biggest one-season turnaround in team history in 2010, the  Bucs going from 3-13 in 2009 to 10-6 a year later. The Bucs, despite having the youngest roster in the NFL stocked with low-round draft picks and undrafted players, barely missed the playoffs despite a litany of injuries that required backups to play central roles.

The Glazer family, which owns the team, was apparently sold.

"It has been a pleasure working with a person and a talent like Mark, and so gratifying to witness his well-deserved success," co-chairman Joel Glazer said. "By the end of this contract, Mark will have dedicated two decades to giving Tampa the winner it deserves."

Coach Raheem Morris is signed through the 2012 season after the team Bucs picked up a two-year option on his contract in January. At the time, Dominik's contract option called for just a one-year extension, which the team exercised. But Dominik, perhaps aware ownership would address his deal, expressed no concerns. This deal will not expire until after the 2014 season.

"I'm appreciative of the confidence the Glazer family has in the direction of the franchise," Dominik said. "I'm looking forward to working into my 20th year as a proud part of this community and organization. The mission is to continue building this team into a lasting contender and to bring championships back to the Tampa Bay area."
