Bucs' Mike Williams wakes up

Receiver Mike Williams has had a frustrating few weeks as defenses make him a focus of their gameplans. The standout rookie was coming off a game at Washington in which he was held to one reception, the result of double coverage.

Williams had been averaging 3.2 catches for 45 yards in his previous five games, but on Sunday, the Bucs turned to some alternate methods of getting Williams the ball, using pre-snap motion and even a screen pass that Williams turned into a 26-yard gain. Earlier, Williams ran by a defender and caught a strike from Freeman for a 24-yard touchdown on a post route down the middle of the field.

“We have a few more different plays for me,” Williams said. “And moving me around is helping a lot.”

Williams now leads all rookie receivers with 58 catches and 880 yards, and is closing in on 1,000 yards. Also, with Sunday’s touchdown, he brings his season total to eight, surpassing Michael Clayton’s team rookie record of seven set in 2004.
