Bucs place P Johnson, CB Cox on Injured Reserve
The Bucs' aborted fake punt cost them more than Sunday's game at Atlanta.
Punter Dirk Johnson said he suffered a left hamstring tear on the play and was placed Injured Reserve Monday, along with cornerback Torrie Cox (hip). The Bucs promoted Brandon Anderson from their practice squad. The team also placed guard Arron Sears on a reserve non-football illness list, meaning he won't play in 2009.
"You just do what you can do,'' Johnson said. "Yeah, man, if I can't perform, it's like anybody else. If you can't do it, you can't do it.''
The Bucs will begin to work out punters today or Tuesday. Johnson also held for place kicks.
Sears will be able to continue to work out and attempt to improve his conditioning.
Receiver Michael Clayton left Sunday's game in the first quarter with a knee injury. His status will be updated Wednesday.
"Those two were the significant ones,'' Morris said of the injuries to Johnson and Cox. "Mike Clayton will be a day-by-day guy. We'll have to see where he is. He was not able to return after the first play of the game, so we'll have to see where he is and what's going on with him.'
The Bucs had a two-week roster exemption for Sears, who was 'significantly,' out of shape after returning from a private matter that forced him to leave the team in March. Morris said he's optimistic Sears will play in 2010.
"It's on the up, from what I can see,'' Morris said. "He's been in the building every day and working out with our trainers and going through all the stuff you need to go through as far getting ready for football...like we said earlier, it would've been wishful thinking to think he was going to make it back this year.''
