Bucs rookie camp underway; interesting prospects among tryout players

The Bucs' rookie minicamp is underway here at One Buc Place in Tampa, giving the likes of Mark Barron, Doug Martin and Lavonte David their first opportunity to don pewter and red.

But the Bucs also have a number of other interesting players participating, including former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson, here as a tryout candidate. Also participating: Receiver Ed Gant, who had a strong showing in training camp last season but spent the year on the practice squad (making him eligible to take part this weekend). Another surprise name: cornerback Derrick Roberson, who was on NFL rosters (including the Bucs') in 2009 and 2010, but isn't currently signed.

Roberson played for coach Greg Schiano at Rutgers, by the way. That makes him one of five players on this weekend's roster who are former Scarlet Knights (that includes paralyzed Eric LeGrand, who is technically on the roster).

Meanwhile, some of the Bucs' defensive draft picks, while their undrafted counterparts worked on basic drills, worked on a separate field on more advanced concepts, likely for them to put to use when the full squad gathers for OTAs. They clearly aren't being evaluated in the same fashion as the players here for tryouts.

We'll hear from Barron, Martin, David  and Schiano when practice ends.
