Bucs signing more tryout candidates from rookie camp

The Bucs aren't expected to provide a full list of signees from their rookie camp until Monday, but we've learned of a couple transactions that are now official.

Cornerback Derrick Roberson, a former Buc who has been out of the NFL since 2010, was signed to the active roster. So, too, was defensive end Hilee Taylor, a 2008 seventh-round draft pick of the Panthers who also didn't play in the league in 2011.

Roberson was on the Bucs' roster in 2010 but was battling to overcome a serious injury to his abductor muscle, he said. He spent 2011 trying to get healthy and hopes he's proved he's ready to compete again. The fact that Roberson played for Schiano at Rutgers wasn't going to ensure him a spot, Roberson said.

"One thing I knew was that I couldn’t take me and Coach Schiano’s relationship for granted," Roberson said. "I knew Coach Schiano wasn’t going to give me anything. I knew I was going to have to come in and here and prove myself.

"I’m humble, and I’m back and ready to play football. I knew that was the opportunity he was going to give me, just to show that I’m able to come out here and produce. Nothing is (taken) for granted."

Taylor has had a bit of a winding road. He was claimed off waivers by the Lions last August after his release from Carolina but did not report. His agent later told the Detroit Free Press he was retiring to pursue other opportunities in his life. Something clearly has changed, though it remains unclear what that might be.
