Bucs WR Benn re-injures knee and placed on IR

For the third straight year, Arrelious Benn's season will end with an injury.

Benn, a second-round pick from Illinois in 2010, was placed on injured reserve Thursday after he re-injured his right knee in Sunday's 27-21 overtime win over Carolina. He played the entire game covering kicks and at receiver but experienced a great deal of pain in the knee afterward.

The Bucs do not believe Benn's injury is that serious -- possibily a slight tear of the medial collateral ligament. He's expected to make a full recovery after an arthroscopic procedure.

To replace Benn on the roster, the Bucs signed receiver David Douglas from the New York Giants practice squad.

"The knee was a surprise to me,'' Bucs coach Greg Schiano said. "He's been struggling with (the shoulder), but he came in and said (the knee) was really bothering him, so we looked at it and that's the decision. I'm disappointed because he was helping in a lot of ways but on special teams, he had a really good performance, he had three tackles on special teams in Carolina.

"So again, we've just got to move on and figure out a plan and we'll do that in a couple days how we're going to fill in for him and we'll go on from there.''

Benn was injured on the first day of training camp when he collided with cornerback E.J. Biggers -- who suffered a broken foot on the play. Benn suffered a sprained right MCL and missed all of the preseason and the regular-season opener before playing as a kickoff returner in Week 2 against the New York Giants.

In eight games this season, Benn caught four passes for 26 yards and rushed three times for 16 yards. He eventually was replaced as the slow receiver by Tiquan Underwood.

Benn suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Seattle and missed the final game of his rookie season after being placed on IR. Last year, Benn missed two of the final three games after sustaining a neck injury but was not placed on injured reserve.
