Dominik: Bucs not rebuilding
New general manager Mark Dominik does not believe the Bucs are in a "rebuilding mode,' under first-year coach Raheem Morris.
"I don't like that word,'' Dominik said. "No. I don't think so, because like I said early on, I think there's a good, strong nucleus of young players, I think we have some good, veteran leadership on this team, so I don't see us being in a rebuilding mode.''
Dominik, who is entering his 15th season with the Bucs, says he took plenty from all the men he has worked with in the front office, including Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell, Bears GM Jerry Angelo, Falcons president Rich McKay and recently fired Bucs GM Bruce Allen.
"Tim was a very organized leader,'' Dominik said. "I thought he did a great job of making sure everyone was accountable. I learned that facet from him. Jerry Angelo to me was a great thinker. He always had a reason he was making a decision and not just change for change. Rich taught me a lot about communication in terms of working with the media, how to approach the media, how to speak to the media. In ways, they've all had little parts and I'm hoping I gravitated to the right parts of each one of them.
"Bruce was great for me and obviously helped me sit in this chair today.''
Dominik said Kevin Demoff will assist him in negotiating contracts and managing the salary cap.
"Again, I think it's the people around you that can make you better and that's going to be our philosophy,'' Dominik said.
Dominik said he believes Morris will relate to players on both sides of the ball.
"I can tell you from experience that players on offense, just like players on defense, relate to Raheem. He has that kind of charisma, that guys gravitate towards him and will listen to him and they'll follow him.''
Completing a coaching staff will be the first order of business for Morris and Dominik. Interviews will continue at the Senior Bowl next week, but he did not disclose the names of candidates.
"I think we have some experienced coaches that are under contract and we'll just kind of work on that in the next couple weeks,'' Dominik said.
