Doug Williams, Mark Dominik release statements on decision
In announcing what has been described as the mutual decision for Doug Williams to leave his post in the Bucs' front office, the team released statements from Williams and general manager Mark Dominik.
Williams said: "Mark and I have sat down and talked about my future. After a lot of thought, I felt that it was the right time for me to look at new options. I wish nothing but the best for the Buccaneers."
Dominik said: "I have tremendous respect for Doug's talents and am very appreciative of his many contributions to this franchise over the years. At the end of last season, Doug and I began a conversation regarding his career. Doug concluded that now is the time for him to make the smoothest transition. Like Mike Alstott and Lee Roy Selmon, Doug will stay involved as a representative of the team in the community."
As to that last part of Dominik's statement -- about Williams continuing to have a role in the community -- it remains to be seen how that will evolve. But Williams clearly is a great ambassador for the team and is beloved by its current players, over which he had a good deal of influence.
We're told that it's unlikely we'll hear from Williams today as he has decided to lay low for the moment. But we'll continue making efforts to contact him and bring you whatever he has to share about this decision.
