During Bucs' interview process, remember the Rooney Rule



There's a small tidbit we should point out as the Bucs move forward with their coaching search.

As Tampa Bay proceeds with interviews, don't expect general manager Mark Dominik and the Glazer brothers to hire the first candidate they sit down with. That's because they must first comply with the Rooney Rule, a requirement that teams searching for head coaches interview at least one minority candidate.

There are a number of up-and-coming minority coaches in the league, so finding interesting minority candidates shouldn't be a problem. But this is just one of many things that will be a part of this complicated process.

As for the rule's effectiveness, some argue it's little more than a quota. But the Fritz-Pollard Alliance, which promotes diversity on NFL coaching staffs and front offices, continues to support it because the FPA says the rule raises awareness of specific minority coaching candidates.

In fact, Raheem Morris, who interviewed with the Broncos before landing the Bucs head coaching job in 2009, arguably was a beneficiary of the Rooney Rule. Not long after he began drawing interest from the Broncos (who eventually hired Josh McDaniels) and other clubs, the Bucs promoted him.
