Jim Bates to coach Bucs' D
Veteran defensive coordinator Jim Bates has been hired for the same position in Tampa Bay, the Times has confirmed.
Bates was formerly a defensive coordinator for the Dolphins, Packers and Broncos. He also had a brief stint as the Dolphins' head coach. His most recent job was the Broncos' assistant head coach/defense.
Bates brings years of experience to the Bucs, who have a mixture of veterans and young players on a defense that surprising faltered late in the season. In particular, Bates has a wide range of defensive knowledge as he has coached both 4-3 and 3-4 defenses. It's unlikely the Bucs would alter their traditional 4-3 scheme, but Bates might consider some tinkering.
The Bucs are expected to announce the move later today and we hope to get some more insight on this move from management afterward.
UPDATE, 3:19 p.m.: The Bucs have announced the move, making Bates' addition official.
