Josh Freeman blocks out growing number of critics

Josh Freeman continues to be the subject of much debate among fans and media after three subpar performances, including Sunday’s four-interception game at New Orleans.

The criticism has been, in some cases, harsh. Just don’t ask Freeman what’s being said about him. Listening to it, he says, is counterproductive.

“It’s funny because one of my friends asked me about something, an article they read,” Freeman said today. “I’m completely disconnected (from that). You hear about so many guys who care too much about opinions that don’t matter. I’m not saying that the fans don’t matter. Obviously you want to go out and put a great product on the field for them. But I’m saying that there’s nothing that any of our fans are going to say that is going to affect me in a positive way or help my preparation.

“It just really becomes a distraction. I see a lot of guys who get caught up in buying into that and lose confidence and losing what got them to the point they were at in the first place. I’m working. I’m battling. You guys can chatter and argue it out.”

Instead, Freeman insists he is self-assured despite his setbacks.

“My confidence has been where it's been really the entire season," he said. "I've got a lot of confidence in myself, I've got a lot of confidence in my coaches and my teammates and it doesn't really change, regardless. I feel like there are so many different things that people allow to affect their confidence and their thought process.

“The way I look at it, if I focus on getting just one tenth of one percent better every day. . . then I've not got reason to worry. I don't worry, ‘When are we going to make a mistake?’ It's kind of, ‘Oh, I made a mistake.’ It's not really ever doubting my abilities and ever doubting my teammates.”
