Mark Dominik updates on free agency
GM Mark Dominik stuck around for a few minutes after Derrick Ward's press conference to offer us a quick status update on free agency.
There weren't a lot of specifics because so many things are still fluid, but Dominik was clear that the Bucs are still talking to the agents for CB Phillip Buchanon and SS Jermaine Phillips, even as both gauge interest from other teams. He spoke with both representatives as recently as today.
"With the market the way it is, the only thing we can do is make sure we're in constant communication with their agents and then they have to make decisions, as do we," Dominik said.
Regarding the numerous reports about the Bucs being connected to trade talks with QBs Matt Cassel and Jay Cutler, Dominik wouldn't comment specifically, citing the fact both players are under contract with other teams. He did, however, say the Bucs remain confident in their current group of three quarterbacks but expect to take four to training camp. That means the Bucs are almost guaranteed to address the position in free agency or in the draft.
On the subject of RB Cadillac Williams, Dominik said he would be welcomed back to the lineup if his knee rehab goes according to play. He isn't running just yet, but Dominik said he was proud of his progress after December's torn patellar tendon.
"We'll find a role for a guy like Carnell if it makes sense, Dominik said.
Also, regarding Friday's Kellen Winslow trade, Dominik confirmed the Bucs dealt their second-round pick this year and their fifth-rounder in 2010.
