Mixed news from Morris Claiborne's pro day

LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne showed some flash in his pro day today, running a 40-yard dash in a reported 4.39 seconds.

But there also was some not-so-good news regarding this prime candidate for the Bucs' No. 5 overall draft choice: He needs wrist surgery.

Claiborne told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that he suffered a torn ligament in the left wrist during the epic LSU-Alabama regular-season meeting last fall and will have it repaired on Friday. That means Claiborne played with the injury for much of the season, suggesting it isn't terribly serious. Also, given all the medical scrutiny players are subjected to at the NFL Combine, it's fair to assume NFL teams are already aware of this.

As for Claiborne's 40-yard dash, it was an encouraging development considering his 4.47 time at the NFL Combine. The logical conclusion here is that whatever concerns might be raised by Claiborne's wrist surgery are arguably offset by today's impressive 40 time.
