Bucs Beat

Rick Stroud, Greg Auman and Matt Baker

Next few weeks critical for Buccaneers

It's June 1, which means the summer is just getting underway. That's also a sign that the NFL offseason is winding down.

The Bucs will have nine more opportunities to take the field before they break for the rest of the summer. That's three OTA sessions this week and next (Tuesday-Thursday) followed by the team's mandatory minicamp June 16-18.

Whatever they hope to accomplish on the field before training camp has got to happen quickly. And for the Bucs, the to-do list has been long given the change in scheme on both offense and defense. Both coordinators seem pleased with the speed with which players are picking things up.

Something else that will have to be decided soon is which players will be released to make room for the still-unsigned rookies. Until they sign contracts, rookies don't count against the 80-man training camp roster limit. Players on the bubble have a limited amount of time left to make an impression. Many of those will feel intense pressure to display their talent in the coming weeks.

Before you know it, we'll be writing stories about the Bucs getting ready to report to training camp and the season getting underway in earnest.
