QBs coach Olson will interview for coordinator
Bucs quarterbacks coach Greg Olson said he will interview for the team's vacant offensive coordinator position.
Olson was the Rams offensive coordinator from 2006-07. In his first season, the Rams finished ranked fourth overall before slipping to 24th. He was then told by then coach Scott Linehan he would be replaced as offensive coordinator but could remain with the team in another position. He chose to join the Bucs as quarterbacks coach last season.
Ironically, a top candidate for the Bucs' offensive coordinator post is Linehan.
Like everyone else, Olson expressed surprise over the firing of coach Jon Gruden Friday.
"I wasn't supposed to come (to the Senior Bowl),'' Olson said. "Jon and I were supposed to be meet about a tight ends coach today.''
But instead, Olson was told to begin evaluating offensive talent at the Senior Bowl. "I'm looking forward to sitting down with Raheem,'' Olson said of the offensive coordinator position.
Other candidates include Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and former Browns offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski.
Olson said he has been in contact with quarterbacks Jeff Garcia and Brian Griese since Gruden's firing. Both players are anxious to return, but Griese might have the inside track because he already is under contract.
