Raheem Morris moves on, but will he be a head coach again?

As you may have read by now, former Bucs coach Raheem Morris had some interesting comments in today’s Tampa Bay Times ahead of tonight’s Bucs game against Morris’ current team, the Redskins.

Among the things he reveals is that he sent a not-so-subtle text message to general manager Mark Dominik on the day the Bucs committed $140 million in salary to free agents Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks and Eric Wright. It was a luxury Morris was never afforded, having coached the Bucs during years when they consistently had one of the NFL’s lowest payrolls.

But the past is the past. Let’s look ahead.

All this conversation about Morris begs an interesting question: Will he ever get the shot to be a head coach again?

We can only speculate for now, especially because Morris is merely coaching defensive backs in Washington – not really positioning him to rehab his image after 10 straight losses led to his firing.

But Morris had a chance to be the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, a job he would have taken had he not already committed to Redskins coach Mike Shanahan. If another coordinator opportunity comes and Morris is successful, does that put him in the conversation to return to the corner office? If he has more resources and players with whom he doesn’t have history – the opposite situation worked to his detriment in Tampa Bay – would he be more likely to succeed?

Morris has some intangibles that are valuable. Just like 4-12 last season was no fluke, neither was the team’s 10-6 record in 2010, when Morris’ motivational skills squeezed every ounce of production out of the youngest team in the NFL.

My sense? I think Morris will get another shot, provided he does an extreme makeover with a successful stint as a coordinator, something he never did before his ascension to the top job.
