Report: Steelers may be eyeing Byron Leftwich
There may be a market for quarterback Byron Leftwich.
Given the troubles facing Ben Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers are waiting for Leftwich to be released by the Buccaneers, according to the Pittsburgh Sports Examiner.
Leftwich was Big Ben's backup during their Super Bowl run in the 2008 season before signing as a free agent with the Bucs last year. He went 0-3 as a starter and eventually was placed on injured reserve with tendonitis in his right throwing elbow.
The Bucs are now committed to Josh Freeman as their franchise quarterback and general manager Mark Dominik and coach Raheem Morris have no qualms about Josh Johnson and Rudy Carpenter backing him up.
That means Leftwich is expendable. But because he didn't play enough to trigger any bonus, the Bucs are in no hurry to release Leftwich, hoping he might have some value down the road.
Thanks to Roethlisberger's possible legal issues facing him in Georgia, a spot for Leftwich may materialize sooner than expected.
