Sabby Piscitelli released, Kyle Moore to injured reserve

Bucs coach Raheem Morris suggested on Monday there would be roster moves in the wake of Cody Grimm's and Davin Joseph's season-ending injuries on Sunday. But no one could have predicted the surprise in store.

The Bucs released 2007 second-round pick Sabby Piscitelli today, a move that comes only days after the Bucs lost free safety Grimm against Baltimore, after which Piscitelli was the first player off the bench to replace him. Also, defensive end Kyle Moore (shoulder) is headed to injured reserve after missing the past month without much improvement.

With a total of four open roster spots (with Grimm and Joseph headed to injured reserve), the Bucs filled them with practice-squad call-ups afety Vince Anderson, receiver Dezmon Briscoe, guard Brandon Carter and Browns practice-squad member Larry Asante, another safety.

It's unclear what prompted the decision to release Piscitelli, but it's likely a product of performance. The coaching staff's view of Piscitelli became clearer when Grimm was chosen as the replacement for Tanard Jackson, who in September was suspended for a year for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy. That came on the heels of Piscitelli losing out on the starting strong safety job to free agent Sean Jones, after which Piscitelli protested to reporters saying the battle "wasn't a fair fight."

But it was Piscitelli's subpar performance in 2009 that prompted the Bucs to sign Jones in the first place.

The release of Piscitelli likely means special-teams ace Corey Lynch shoots to the top of the depth chart at free safety. He has garnered the attention of coaches during practice and through the preseason, convincing the team to take the unusual step of keeping five safeties at final cuts. Most often, clubs keep four safeties on the roster at any given time.
