Saints' Malcolm Jenkins defensive about fight with Freeman
Saints cornerback Malcolm Jenkins had a curious response to questions about his run-in with Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman in the fourth quarter today.
Jenkins hit Freeman as Freeman was running out of bounds, in the knees, to boot. Freeman ran over to Jenkins after the play to protest the hit and, after a few words were exchanged, Jenkins threw a punch at Freeman (who still had his helmet on).
But Jenkins seems to have a different recollection.
"After I hit the quarterback, the whole sideline came over pushing and shoving, and they called another flag on me," he said. "That's how it rolls sometimes. I've never seen anybody get a penalty for 30 yards before. I don't know what happened. A couple of guys grabbed me up and pushed me around, I pushed back and they threw another flag on me. It happens."
Jenkins got the original 15-yard penalty for a late, then was assessed a dead-ball personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct for the punch. He was quite fortunate not to be thrown out of the game, which is what Raheem Morris ranted about to the officials after the sequence ended.
Freeman said he didn't make physical contact with Jenkins, but just wanted to make his displeasure clear.
Some players said off the record that the Saints have used a number of cheap shots against the Bucs in their past meetings. And you can be sure there will be plenty of side conversation when the clubs meeting in New Orleans for the season finale.
