Bucs Beat

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris' Thursday quotes

(On Kellen Clemens)
“Kellen Clemens is a very good quarterback. He was in the competition there when they first started the season, did a really good job from when he had an opportunity to play. He’s a good prospect, a good quarterback, one of the guys that they look forward to that they brought in there to lead their franchise the way they wanted it to go. They happened to draft Mark Sanchez this year, and they had a nice battle out there this year. It’s really what you want, when you have two really good players at quarterback, you’ve got a lot to build on.”

(On Jets number one ranked rushing offense)
“What they do out there is get bigger. They put in a bunch of tackles, put in a lot of extra guys to go block and they just keep running the football. Thomas Jones is explosive, Shonn Greene is explosive, and they had a young back there before he went on the IR that was explosive, the young man from Florida State. They’ve been playing well; they’ve been running the football well, they’re a good football team. It’s the same old deal, you go play Miami, they’re number three in rushing, or whatever they were. You play Carolina; they were number two or whatever they were. Now here comes number one, another challenge for this young football team and another challenge for us.”

(On the Jets blitzing)
“You don’t slow it down; you just better know how to protect it. You have to know how to protect it; you have to know what you’re going to do. They are going to keep it coming all day, that’s what he does, that what they have always done. If you back them off their blitzes then maybe you have something to work with. For the most part, you better know how to control it and play with it.”

(On Aqib Talib)
“He fought through the injury for about five weeks and then kind of got it in the Atlanta game and forced him out of one. He’s a tough guy when it comes to playing football, and comes to doing something he loves to do. He’s dedicated; he’ll do anything he can to get back. He’s out there full practice, I haven’t slowed him down, he won’t let you slow him down, he won’t take himself out of practice. He’s one of those guys that likes playing and likes practicing.”

(On improvements leading to wins)
“That would be nice to talk about wins. Those are things you want to talk about. The ultimate improvement sign is going out there and getting wins, that’s what we’re looking for. You have to go out everyday and search for that win. You guys keep asking me about what I’m doing and what’s going on about progress, for the most part you look at the wins. Nobody on that team is satisfied, nobody on that team is happy. We all want to get wins, we all want to go out there and win football games.”

(On if Rex Ryan is sitting Sanchez because he feels like they can handle the Buccaneers with a backup QB)
“I don’t know what Ryan is thinking. It’s not my job to think that. I just have to go out and try to get a win. I don’t think they are sitting comfortable enough that they can do something like that but that’s his decision. That’s a decision that you have to make as a head coach. Those are the things that you have to make. You have to go out there and play. The lead dog of their offense, if they really wanted to shut it down they would sit down Thomas Jones (laughing). The lead dog of their offense is the running attack. I don’t think he would do that. I think he is protecting his young player as far as injuries. I’m sure the young man wants to play. They all want to play. Michael Clayton wants to play like you asked me this week. You have to be a coach, be smart and know when they can’t play. It’s just one of those things that you have to do and a tough decision you have to make. “

(On their secondary)

“Darrelle Revis, Kerry Rhodes some of those guys. I think Kerry Rhodes got benched this year. He is a stud. All of those guys are. They play well and play great defense. They have the Dwight Lowery coming off the bench as their nickel. They have Lito Sheppard on the other corner. [Jim] Leonhard is back there from Baltimore. A lot of the guys are very talented and have some experience with the system and are very talented. They do a great job.”

(On having a strong finish)
“That’s really the whole idea for us. I tell these guys that this is you four preseason games. This is what we are going to look like in 2010 and we have four preseason games, we have eight. This is our four games into the offseason. We are going to go out there and finish as strong as we possibly can because we owe it to our fans. We owe it to ourselves. We want to show what this team is going to be about in the future. That’s what we’ve been about right now, building us for the future. We don’t have any long term playoff goals right ahead right now. We can’t do it. We can’t make it. Mathematically we are out. We have to get ready for the following season to come.”

(On if they are playing for jobs)
“These players, these coaches, we all are. This is the National Football League. You have to go out there, play and give it your best shot. You have to put your best foot forward every day. Our cook even has to put his best foot forward. Dinner better be good tonight (laughing).”
