Could Jameis Winston be next QB to make Super Bowl debut?
With Atlanta's Matt Ryan about to make his Super Bowl debut in 13 days against the Patriots, ESPN's "Mike and Mike" show posed an interesting question: Who is the next NFL quarterback to make their Super Bowl debut?
A reminder, first, of who else is off the table, having played in a Super Bowl: Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, Colin Kaepernick, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.
The answer, for ESPN's Ryan Clark, who won a Super Bowl ring in Tampa when the Steelers beat the Cardinals in 2009: Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston.
"I think Tampa is moving in the right direction," Clark said at the 38:15 mark here. "And in order for him to make his debut, you're going to have to break through some of these guys we expect to be there year in and year out. Being part of the NFC South, it changes who the champion of that division is year to year."
Mike Golic offered up Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott as his answer. Do you count Kansas City's Alex Smith, who was a backup with the 49ers in 2012? You could make a case for Derek Carr or Matthew Stafford among this year's playoff teams, or a Marcus Mariota or Kirk Cousins among those who fell short of the playoffs ...
