Gerald McCoy, Doug Martin held out for Bucs-Jaguars game
Erring on the side of caution, the Bucs announced Saturday that Pro Bowlers Gerald McCoy and Doug Martin will be held out of the Bucs' second preseason game against the Jaguars in Jacksonville.
Martin practiced all week but is being held out due to a rib injury, while McCoy, who had a minor ankle injury in Thursday's practice, will also be a scratch. Also sidelined is veteran linebacker Daryl Smith, who didn't participate in either of the joint practices with the Jaguars on Wednesday and Thursday.
With Martin out, Charles Sims will get the first crack, and the long list of potential No. 3 running backs -- including Mike James and rookie Peyton Barber -- will have a bigger opportunity to showcase themselves. With Smith out, expect to see more of rookie Devante Bond, who has been working as the second-string strongside linebacker.
The Bucs will also be without three players who have missed most of all of training camp with injuries -- guard J.R. Sweezy, who is expected to miss the first five games; WR Louis Murphy, who could also open the year on the physically unable to perform list, and rookie guard Caleb Benenoch, who has missed the last two weeks with a foot/ankle injury.
